:- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Warren -- A clever twist on the Little Mermaid : Can the villain have romance? Briony, after refusing to take part in the Mermaid feast, is dubbed a witch by the other mermaids. Briony makes friends with a darling deal she maybe Pup—an appropriate name for his personality. As Briony continues to create potions and experiment with her magic, she has an opportunity to save a sailor who was injured on the beach. Soon after this, Lyra, a little mermaid comes to ask for Briony’s help. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Lisa Dawn -- A Daring Take on "The Little Mermaid" : You've heard of the "not like other girls" trope, but what about "not like other mermaids?" Briony starts her journey as a naive young mermaid in training for her first feast with little understanding of what that feast entails aside from what she learned in her classes with her elders. When she realizes that her mer-sisters are heartless sirens who suck out the souls of helpless sailors to keep themselves young, healthy, and beautiful, she decides that life is not for her. She swims to a secluded part of the ocean and becomes a recluse who practices magic and avoids hurting innocent people. Vicious rumors begin to spread about her among the merfolk for not participating in their deadly games. One day, she finds a human man who somehow escaped the clutches of the siren song and brings him safely to shore. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 31, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Beautiful! : Lovely new retelling of the Little Mermaid fairytale! Exceptional imagery and use of symbolism to demonstrate that bad actions can look beautiful, but good actions honor yourself as well as others so that people who sincerely do good develop a beautiful character. - 4.0 out of 5 stars from Callen-wisdom -- The truth behind the sea witch : I enjoyed this interesting twist on the little mermaid. Bryony decided she didn't want to feast on the souls of men like the other mermaids who were using their voices to lure men to their deaths. Instead she discovered other ways to make magic so they called her a witch. She uses the power to help others including finding a way to make the humans immune to the songs of the mermaids. I love the happy ending of this story. Highly recommend this sweet read! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from HrcHrc -- Best version of Little Mermaid I have ever read : The Little Mermaid is my least favorite fairy tale to read as a retold or twisted story. Not totally sure why, but usually I can't get into feeling empathy towards any of the characters. Not the case at all with this version, though! It is a bittersweet tale with a wonderful twist that almost makes it a totally new story. Almost all of the A Villain's Ever After books have been impressive, but this one steals the show. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Short, but such a good retelling : It has so much story packed into it. Most of the characters are rather flat, but they aren't really what drives this story. Briony, the sea witch, has depth of character, filled with emotions like fear and uncertainty, but also cares deeply for others and has the strength of determination to protect the vulnerable at all costs. She is the story. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 29, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from April Hogue -- Loved it! : I really enjoyed this new take on the sea witch villain from The Little Mermaid tale. While Disney's Ursula was evil through and through, this book's Briony is the exact opposite. By rejecting the ways of her soul-taking siren "sisters" and instead of ingesting souls, she works to save the men from drowning, thus alienating her from the rest of her clan. Another enchanting fairytale retelling from A. G. Marshall! ( Reviewed in the United States on October 25, 2021 )
- 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leah -- Captivating! : I’ve always loved the Little Mermaid, so I’ve been looking forward to this book for months. The idea of making the sea witch the heroine and the little mermaid the villain intrigued me, and I’m happy to say that the book met all my expectations! The magic descriptions were enchanting, the characters dynamic, and the plot well-paced. It’s clean in all aspects. I love A.G. Marshall’s books and look forward to reading more of her works. - 5.0 out of 5 stars from Kindle Customer -- Warm and vibrant : One of my favourites so far from the collection. The story feels just right for the novella length and the characters are given just enough time and space to develop. A warm, comforting read. ( Reviewed in Canada on October 22, 2021 )
